Dr. Otto C C Lin
Prof Otto Lin was formerly President of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) of Taiwan and, Vice President for Research and Development of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). After retirement, he has engaged in writing, lecturing and consultancy in innovation and entrepreneurship.
ITRI is widely known for its development and transfer of modern technologies including: microelectronic, materials, manufacturing and other, contributing to the transformation of Taiwan to a technology intensive economy in the post 1980 period. HKUST is recognized as a young research university rapidly gaining world class standing. Both institutions are proactive incubators of innovation and entrepreneurship.
Prof Lin will speak from personal observations of many entrepreneurship cases. It will be shown that having the technology or product of niched advantage in the marketplace is merely one of many factors determining the success of the lab to market process. The success requires the building of a team of multidisciplinary talents, management of the innovation eco-system and the ability to nurture business culture and social responsibility. Many of these fall under the category of soft power whose importance are generally under-estimated by entrepreneurial engineers and scientists.
Prof Lin received his Ph.D degree from Columbia University and worked in the US industry for nearly 20 years before returning to the AP region.
